We had the chance to ask some questions to the designer of the eponymous brand, Spencer Badu. With a penchant for the idea of uniforms, his streetwear collections challenge gender norms with brilliance.
Minimal, durable, functional.
Honestly, I think it’s community/peers and the lifestyle we all live. I’m just trying to make things that work as hard as they do. Clothing that they can wear everyday or on special occasions.
My daily uniform starts with a basic Spencer Badu t-shirt or with a graphic depending on the mood, Spencer Badu wide leg sweatpants or cargo chinos and finish off with a pair of Salomon. I have a couple Salomon on rotation right now. I love how lean they are and how easy they are to dress up or down, plus they don’t make my feet hurt after a long day .
To start, form follows function. Beyond the design of the shoes they are made well and for different types of environments. I can tell a lot of development goes into every shoe and that resonates with me a lot. Lastly, with all the research and elements that go into creating shoes, the finished product is always very understated and unobtrusive giving the wear a very understated look- a quiet confidence, if you will. All elements my brand strives for.
