VANS COMFYCUSH CONTEST

In honour of Vans’ comfiest shoes yet, we challenged anyone with a creative mind to give us their interpretation of ‘Comfy’ for a chance to be featured in a digital campaign for Vans ComfyCush. We want to thank all the artists who participated in the Little Burgundy x Vans ComfyCush Contest, we were so impressed with all your submissions! With nearly 1000 entries, picking just one was challenging. We are so happy to announce that the winning artist is : Delphine Bérubé, a graphic design student from Montreal!

Here is a little bit about our winner, and some of our other favourite submissions.

How would you describe your art?

I would say it strikes a balance between vibrant and delicate. Simplicity is important to me, but I like when a piece makes people think and doesn’t give everything away with just one glance. I often use solid colors in the things I make, and like to keep my palette quite minimal. I’m still quite new to the field and feel like I have a lot to learn, but I’m excited to dive into my dream career.

What does “Comfy” mean to you?

To me “Comfy” has to do with well-being, in your body and mind. Baggy clothes from head to toe in a cozy place, that’s my idea of comfy.

What inspires you?

Absolutely everything around me. It’s all about being open to things that get the creative juices flowing, and that’s what I do every day. Whether I’m at home, at school or travelling, I take in everything that catches my eye to be able to use it in my art.

What’s your go-to shoe?

For a while, the Vans Classic Slip-Ons were my everything. Now, I swear by my all white Old Skool Sneakers. They go with everything, like my mom jeans I wear every day or even with a skirt and some white socks.

“As an artist, a surfer, a skater and a traveler, I feel comfy when I am surrounded by people that I love in an environment that brings me freedom. The world is my home and as a nomad, I can rely only on a few matters in order to restore a sense of security and familiarity through the places I visit. Honestly, my three pairs of Vans follow me wherever I go. So they have come a long way. My Vans are messy, washed, filled with holes, smelly, full of sands and dust, but they have many stories to tell. They glide with me through the groovy lifestyle that I am living. They remind me that we have to take care of our possessions, for the love of the environment and also for the memories that they carry and create with us. It makes it hard to throw them away, because they feel like my sweet home wherever I go. And coming back home will always feel comfy for me.”

Comfy means a lot of things. It means oversized sweaters and knitted mittens. It means your favourite blanket, and lounging on a well-loved sofa while watching TV. To me, comfy means the soothing satisfaction of a hot cup of tea, your favourite comfort foods, the relaxation of a bubble bath, getting lost in a good book, the crackle of a fireplace, the warmth of the sun, a hidden cabin deep in the woods, the aroma of a delicious smelling candle, watching the snow fall outside, the embrace of a hug, creating art, and of course, my Vans. As depicted in my drawing, hearing the word comfy evokes many different thoughts, feelings and images in each and every person. What’s more, these thoughts, feelings and images carry their very own meanings and memories. That’s because comfy is no one thing. Everyone has their own unique idea of what is comfy to them but, at the same time, it is something known and shared by all humans. It is something we all have experienced and that we all strive to be or have. Kind of like a pair Vans there is no one style or design but there is a unique, perfect pair out there for everyone.”

Comfort is a driving force in my life and therefore a common theme in my art. I value feeling comfy because it clears my mind, nothing to fuss about. My interpretation of ‘comfy’ is a feeling of weightlessness. Entering a dreamlike state. Feeling like you could float away, transcendent comfiness. My illustration is a translation of the simple bliss of feeling good about where you are and how you are.”

@mvralldayeveryday

Comfy is a lifestyle to me. As an artist I value my down time above all. I also get energized by being around the people I love. I am most comfy laying in the summer grass in the park with my girlfriends. Laughing and napping and letting the world pass us by. These simple, gentle and happy moments make life worth living. For this piece I wanted to capture that perfect summer day and that blissful feeling of comfy you have when you can totally be yourself.”

@eightyaday

Comfy, not a care in the universe. Flopped down into a big soft bean bag chair in your friend’s basement with some cool literature like Thrasher or UFOs monthly, and an ice cold beverage on a hot day. Comfy soled Vans, shoes in the house type of comfy.”

@loopkin_514

I started drawing little monsters as my main characters a few years ago and they stayed and got a little bit chubby with time, getting body comfy. Comfy is being in pajamas on the couch with hot tea and in soft socks, not getting disturb by anything and just letting your imagination go anywhere it wants. I add to my drawings some tributes to Vans for example the pillow patterns look like the sole of a Vans shoe, there is the iconic V like a strap on the knee of the character and the checkerboard pattern as my first pair of slip-on back in 2005-2006.”

@matellizer

For me, the word Comfy resonates with feeling good about yourself and in your mind. All of it leading to a freedom of movement and expression. Feeling relaxed and Zen, no matter what situation you find yourself in.”

@norimisakaki

You know that feeling you get when you hug your loved ones. When you wrap yourself in your softest blanket. Maybe it’s when you wear your favourite pair of shoes that fit you just right or that bubble bath after a long shift. Whatever it is for you, it always hugs and molds to you, it’s true comfort. My illustration depicts a person in the arms of comfort. Your loved ones, your pet, your blanket, a bath, whatever it is for you, he is in awe. He is comfy, happy and ready to take on the world.”

@gen.bigue

To me, comfy is a synonym of worry-free. I think about the freedom that comes with the feeling of being free of any constraints. When I think about comfy, I feel myself longing for those summer days, when the only thing you have planned is to lie down on the ground and watch the clouds drift by. I think about those endless days that you forget the flow of time, you forget your worries, you forget everything. The only thing my mind clings to is the thought to live every moment, fully, and appreciate how life can offer so many comfy moments. In those moments, I feel like anything is possible.”

@sisc_daily

The first thing that came to mind for the word comfy was big fluffy clouds on my feet, and the feeling of walking on air. With that in mind, I started drawing a few concept characters, and after a few variations, Harold and his Cloudy Kickers was staring back at me without a care in the world as he strolled down the street whistling.”
